Schiffili embroidery, known as ‘Broderie Anglaise’ and famously known as hakoba in India, is the eyelet embroidery work made by machines on cotton predominantly, but today, on many fabrics too. This embroidery work was founded in the early 1800s by Issac Groebli from Switzerland. The machine that did this embroidery was a newly invented sewing machine that utilized the elemental lockstitch method with bobbins and shuttles arranged in the shape of a boat. The word ‘Schiffili’ comes from a German dialect meaning ‘little boat’. This embroidery became very popular rapidly hence, countries from all over the world adapted it and started manufacturing it in mass, following America after the World War 2, who designed special Schiffili embroidery machines. A significant amount of research and development has been conducted since then, and modern machines are far more proficient and digitalized.
